Last Monday, I stated that my new pillows needed some embellishment. I decided to try my hand at making the felt flowers I've been seeing everywhere. I found a great video at JesseKate Designs. Kris, unfortunately stopped blogging back in 2010. The template for the flowers can be found here.
Sorry about the photos. For some reason the lighting was kind of funky and the colors are off.
There are many methods to make felt flowers. Here is a tutorial on how to make this flower style.
Print the template on cardstock, cut out, place on felt, and trace. For the largest flower, use all 5 flower patterns, tracing the largest one twice.
Start by folding one petal (heart) in half. Bring the needle up through the felt at the base of the petal. Bring the needle back around and up through same hole pulling tight. Do this 3 times. You place the needle depending on how flat or fluffy you want your flower. I chose to go about halfway.
Fold the next petal in half and repeat. Then go on to the third petal. Tie a knot. Repeat for each of the flowers.
Now it's just a matter of stacking the flowers. Starting with the largest flower, bring the needle up through the center, and thread it through the next flower of the same size. Keep threading the smaller flowers on alternating the petals. Pull the thread tight.
Push the needle back through the center and out the bottom. Repeat this a couple of times to secure the flower. If desired, add a button or bead. Pull the thread tight and tie off on bottom of flower.
I made black flowers for the new pillows in the family room.
If you watch the video, check out the organza flowers. I will be trying those out for another post.
